 AHS School Profile 2006-07

Mission Statement-

Arapahoe High School is committed to effective student-faculty interaction which fosters student potential.

Community-

The Littleton Public Schools serve the cities of Littleton, Centennial and adjacent unincorporated areas. Littleton and Centennial are suburbs south of Denver with many business and professional residents. The student population is approximately 16,000. There are fifteen elementary schools, four middle schools, two charter schools, three high schools and one alternative high school.

Arapahoe High School-

A comprehensive college preparatory four-year high school, opened in 1964.

Variable Scheduling-

The Variable is an adaptation of college semester scheduling. Many classes meet fewer than five periods each week. The periods per week depend upon the demands of the course. There are six periods per day consistsing of 58 minutes each. One semester hour of credit is granted for every period per week spent in class or lab.

The Variable Schedule enables students to have:
1. A more diversified educational experience through a broad range of course offerings.
2. A variety of resource centers and open computer and science laboratories.
3. Opportunity for counselors and teachers to meet and plan with students on a one-to-one basis including independent study options.
4. Opportunity for students to plan their course choices and choose their teachers through a college-type of registration procedure.
5. Opportunity for students to develop responsibility through the wise utilization of unsheduled time.

Support for Students

Study Center -

Academic "double dosing" for students requiring tutoring, additional time and support. Students receive this opportunity during unscheduled time. Self referrals and/or teacher referrals allow students to participate.

Advanced Placement-

In 2007, students took examinations in Biology, Calculus AB/BC, Chemistry, English Literature and Composition, English Language and Composition, French Literature, French Language, Human Geography, Physics B and C, Spanish Language, Statistics, U.S. Government and Politics, U.S. History, Psychology, European History and Music Theory. Of the 791 Exams taken by 385 candidates, 77 percent were graded three or higher.

Carnegie Units-

In converting semester hours into Carnegie Units of credit, allow one-half unit per semester for 3, 4, and 5 semester hour classes and one-fourth unit for 2 semester hour classes. These recommendations are based upon studies done as part of our Accreditation from the Colorado Department of Education and the Colorado High School Activities Association.

GPA and Class Rank-

GPA and rank are based on grades 9-12. All courses for which the student receives an A, B, C, D, or F grade are included in the GPA; Pass/Fail courses are graded P or NC and are not included, but do count for graduation credit. If a student repeats a course, both grades are included in the GPA. All students are included in the class rank. Advanced Placement courses are weighted as follows:
Adv. Placement: A=5, B=4, C=3, D=1, F=0
All Other Courses: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0
